MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC QUARTER CLASS PROJECT

For any student that is enrolled in Music with Ms. Leone as a quarter class for 4th marking period during the 2019-2020 school year, please complete the following project for your marking period grade:

Regardless of where we are or what we have, we can ALL be musicians!  I want you to get creative.  You are going to invent your very own instrument using everyday objects and materials!

Look around your kitchen, your room, your garage, your back yard, your bedroom, the trash and recycling bins. Do you see anything that you can use to create a musical instrument?  Lots and lots of stuff can be used to create an instrument, you just need to think outside of the box.

We will complete this project in several steps, and I will guide you through those steps on our Google Classroom (code to enter is above). Please make sure you check our Google Classroom page regularly.  Students will be able to work at their own pace on this project throughout the marking period.

STEP 1:

Discover the science behind sound, how sound is created, and how sound travels to our ears.  I will post some videos for you to watch about how awesome and amazing sound is!

STEP 2:

Brainstorm!  Think about what kind of instrument you want to create, and how you want it to look and sound.  Draw a picture of your future instrument and its different parts.  Remember--music and visual art are closely related.  You can even decorate your instrument with color and artwork!  You can include this on your picture.

STEP 3:

Find your materials!  Look around your house, garage, back yard, kitchen, bedroom, etc. and gather objects and materials that you might be able to use to create your instrument.  You will make a list of everything you find so you stay organized!

STEP 4:

Create your very own instrument!  After you create your instrument and test it out, record a video on our class's FlipGrid page of you showing us your instrument, what it looks like, how you play it, and what it sounds like!  At the end of the marking period, we will all be able to see each other's crazy zany awesome homemade musical instruments!

Music is FUN.  Music is CREATIVE.  Music is EXPRESSIVE.  Music fills our lives with JOY!  Have fun with this project.  Use it as a way to take a little vacation from whatever is on your mind.  I can't wait to see what you all come up with!
